Kerry Way Ireland Trip Video 2006
Kerry Way Video Background
The Kerry Way is one of the epic hikes in Ireland. In total it is 134 miles forming a loop trail through County Kerry, in the south west corner of Ireland. We hiked the 50 miles from Waterville to Killarney and took a day hike to Lake Acoose.
When we started planning the hike, we also considered the Dingle Way, a 100 mile loop on the peninsula north of the one where the Kerry Way sits. We chose Kerry because we wanted to end in Killarney and thought we might climb Carrauntoohil, the tallest mountain in Ireland. That didn't work out but we were very happy with the trip.
The Kerry Way is not really a backpacking trip. Though there are a few places you can probably pitch a tent, it is a hike from town to town, B&B to B&B. We carried light packs with that day's lunch, water, rain gear, gaiters, and a change of clothes for when we got to the B&B, including shoes. Your boots will be soaked. A map is always helpful because there are many roads and paths to re-direct you.
Nick was on his second semester abroad in London so we met in Dublin. We took the train to Killarney and stashed his huge duffel bag that held all his stuff from his stay in London at some hostel. After a little sight seeing, we took a bus to Waterville to start the hike.
