Comanche-Venable Loop, Crestone Area, Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, Colorado

Preliminary Maps

The Sangre De Cristo Mountains are a northwest-southeast trending spine in south central Colorado that features a series of northeast-southwest trending glacially carved valleys. While there are trails going up many of the valleys, these maps focus on one of the few "official" loops. There are two versions of the loop. The more popular east loop starts on the east side of the range at Alvarado Recreation Area and uses the Comanche and Venable valleys to enter and exit the high country. Connecting the two, traversing the connecting ridge, is Phantom Terrace. Phantom Terrace is also the connector for the west loop. It begins at Crestone Campground and uses the Middle and North Forks of Crestone Creek.

The Maps: The maps are true 1:24,000 scale based on the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles. The trails are from the Forest Service GIS database. The loop is shown in red. The yellow trail is the multi use Rainbow Trail, which is a necessary for many of the trails on the east side of the range. All other trails are blue. The green and black line is the wilderness boundary. The forest roads are in black and based on aerial and satellite imagery.

The top map is of the general area, shows some other trip options and shows access roads. It is free to down load. Because of it's size, preprinted maps are not available.

The bottom two maps are the east and west loop. These maps are FREE to download and print. Click on image to access full size maps and download them. They are formatted for printing on 11x17 paper. Alternatively, both maps are available on 11x17 Rite in the Rain weatherproof stock for $5/sheet ($10 for the set) plus S&H. Email Charlie@OuachitaMaps.com.
