Buffalo River Trail - Eastern Section

Free downloadable topo maps of the Buffalo River Trail

A little over two dozen river miles downstream from Pruitt is the Eastern Section of the Buffalo River Trail. It begins at the Woolum ford, a popular canoe take-out and the end of the Ozark Highlands Trail, and ends at the US Highway 65 bridge south of Harrison. This 15 mile section stays south of the Buffalo River and skirts Tyler Bend recreation area. I have not been on this section of trail so the map provided here is preliminary. It is based on the Trails Illustrated map, Tim Ernst's trail guide, aerial photos, satellite images and, of course, the USGS topo. If you see any errors or have better data that you would like to share, drop me an email and I'll update the map.

If you are interested in the other trail sections, here are some quick links to those pages:

The Map. The map is 1:24,000 scale based on USGS 7.5 minute quads and is free to download. I have not hiked this section and the maps is based on the Trails Illustrated maps, Tim Ernst's guide book and Google Earth. The BRT is shown in blue. The red trail coming in from the south west is the Ozark Highlands Trail. Way points, shown as filled red circles, correspond to the waypoints in the following narrative and Google Earth (GE) images. Whereas the following narrative expresses the waypoints in UTM, the waypoint tables on the maps are in decimal degrees.

Info. USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle topographic maps: Eula, Snowball and Marshall, AR (trails not shown). Other sources to consider:

  • The National Park Service's free Buffalo National River map with canoe mileages. This does not have the hiking trail on it but provides a good overview of the river.
  • The National Park Service's Buffalo National River website.
  • Ken Smith's Buffalo River HandBook is a comprehensive, 436 page mile-by-mile guide to the river and the BRT. It is written to complement the Trails Illustrated maps and contains 135 pages of geology, biology and history. Available for $21.95 from the Ozark Society.
  • Trails Illustrated Buffalo National River-East Trail Map (1:31,000) for $11.95.
  • Tim Ernst's Buffalo River Hiking Trails is a guide to the trails around the Buffalo River that includes sketch maps and trail profiles for $18.95.
  • Contact the Buffalo National River Headquarters, Harrison, AR (870) 741-5443 or http://www.nps.gov/buff/.

Shuttles and Canoeing.

Directions to Woolum. Although you can get to the trail head from the north, you will have to cross the river. It can be deep, swift and impassable. From the south, you can access the trailhead via the park road that follows the west side of Richland Creek.

Directions to Highway 65. US Highway 65 is a major highway between that runs between Conway and Harrison Arkansas. The trailhead is the southwest side of the bridge where it crosses the Buffalo River.

To Buy Map. The maps is FREE to download. At this time I do not sell a pre-printed version.
